Hawks Reading More Books than Ever!

School has only been in session for 2 weeks and our students are reading like crazy! Over 400 books of all types have been checked out by students. The Hawks Media Center has also launched a new reading program called "Hawks Read Across the Curriulum". All students can keep track of at least 15 books this school year by using this program. The Georgia perfomance standards call for all middle school students to read 25 books each year. The goal is to read books from across all the Fiction and Non-fiction genres and Dewey Decimal sections. Students can start with their summer reading book. There will be rewards for every 5 books completed. We will also be using Destiny Quest, the online catalog system which allows students to look up books found in the HBMS library and sort them according to books they have read, books they are currently reading and books they want to read in the future. We will also be reveiwing books and recommedning them to each other online through Destiny Quest.

How is your summer reading coming along?
I read the cutest book called "Bless this Mouse", written for a younger audience, I couldn't resist reading this new book by Newbery Award Winner, Lois Lowry, (The Giver).
I am enjoying reading "One Crazy Summer" now from the 6th grade reading list. So far so good.
Going to the public library this week to renew my library card so that I can check out online books too! Did you know you could do this?!
We will have our own version through our school this Fall, it's called Follett Shelf and it will allow you to check out books and read on any computer, anywhere.

I am so excited that I have been able to meet with so many classes already this year!
Thanks especially to 6th grade teachers Mrs. Salvatore, Mrs. Garcia and Mr. Brent Rippy, also to 7th grade language arts teachers Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Johnson.

I think every Holcomb Bridge student now knows how to use Destiny, the online library catalog to find books from our library. Some students have already set up their Destiny accounts and are able to put holds on the next book they'd like to read as well as write reviews about books to share with their classmates! I just know our students reading scores are going to soar even higher this year!

I really enjoyed reading "Waiting for Normal" by Leslie Connor!
6th grader Addie, longs for a normal family. She is a very courageous character who goes through some rough times. I loved this book and you will too if you like exciting books with happy endings.

Thanks to all students, parents and staff who purchased books from the BOGO book fair and happy summer reading! Remember there is a significant amount of research that shows that students who continue to read during the break do better at school!

Ms Link's classes are coming to the media center this week to select "free choice" novels.
Each student will pick a book that interests them from any genre of fiction. We will have opportunities to talk about our different books by responding to questions on the class Blog. After we all finish our books we will retell the stories and share them using movie maker or digitales software. What will it be inch size fairies, vampires, thieves and vagabonds, animal heroes, historical characters meet modern day teens? Stay tuned............

Mrs. Reagin has been working collaboratively with 6th grade language arts teachers this month. We are combining our LA standards with our information literacy standards (Standards for the 21st Century Learner by the American Association of School Librarians) to help students become better readers and writers. Using print and online reference resources we are learning to enhance writing and boost vocabulary.
